Audra McDonald is unparalleled in her range and the versatility of her artistry as both an actress and a performer. The winner of a record-breaking 6 Tony Awards two Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award in 2015 she was ranked among Time magazine's 100 most influential people. She also received the National Medal of Arts, America's most prestigious award for excellence in the field--from President Barack Obama. With a soprano of unmatched elegance and an aptitude of dramatizing the truth, her roles in Broadway or in the opera are as comfortable like those on film and TV. Apart from performing in theater, McDonald also has established a successful profession as a music and concert performer. Born into a musical family McDonald grew up within Fresno California and received her classical vocal training at New York's Juilliard School. After graduating, she was awarded the very first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured actress in the Musical Carousel at Lincoln Center Theater (1994). Over the next four years she received two additional Tony Awards in the featured actress category for her performances on The Broadway productions Terrence McNally's play Master Class (1996) and the Musical Ragtime (1998) giving her an unheard of number of Tony Awards before the age of 30. The actress won her fourth Tony in 2004 when she starred alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun as well as at the end of 2012. In 2012, she won five Tonys and her first in the category of lead actress for her performance on stage in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess in the lead role. The actress made Broadway history in 2014 as she became the highest decorated Tony Award performer. The role she played in the role of Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill as well as the role that also helped launch her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, was the reason she received six awards. As well as setting the record for most performances that an actor has won in a competition she also became the first to win honors for all four categories of acting. Then she had an recurring role on NBC's Kidnapped within the next year. McDonald won a 4th Emmy for her performance as Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill on HBO in the year 2016. McDonald starred along with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama co-produced with Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. McDonald has a brief appearance in The Good Wife, a CBS Legal drama The Good Wife as U.S. attorneys Liz Lawrence and Liz Reddick from 2009 to 2018 reprised the roles (now known as Liz Reddick) in The Good Fight as the Paramount+ season regular. McDonald has been nominated to win the three Critics Choice Award awards. Presently, she is appearing as a guest on Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which premieres on HBO.
